India’s Charging Network Hits a Turning Point as Solid-State Looms
Ultra-fast 240kW corridors, a 400,000-charge-point target by 2027, and solid-state cells entering pilot production — India’s EV plumbing is maturing fast.

The story of Indian EVs in 2026 is no longer just about the cars — it is about the plumbing that keeps them running. On both the charging and battery fronts, the infrastructure is maturing faster than most buyers realise.
Highways get serious about charging
Tata Power, in collaboration with Indian Oil, has begun rolling out 240kW ultra-fast charging stations on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, with multi-gun setups designed to keep long-distance EV travel moving. Tata Power already operates 6,700+ public and fleet charging points across 630+ cities, making it the strongest all-round charging incumbent in the country.
The numbers behind the build-out
TATA.ev has announced a target of 400,000 charge points by 2027 under its Open Collaboration framework, partnering with Tata Power, Statiq, Zeon, and ChargeZone. The company also launched 21 Mega Charging Hubs with Shell in February. Nationally, there are now over 12,000 public chargers, with the government pushing for an EV charging point at every fuel station.
Solid-state is no longer science fiction
On the battery side, solid-state cells are entering pilot production in India, expected by late 2026. The promise is significant: greater stability, longer lifespan, and the potential for higher energy density. In the near term, solid-state and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistries are set to dominate, with LFP already prized for its durability and safety.
Better batteries and denser charging are two halves of the same equation. Solve both, and range anxiety stops being a reason not to buy.
For buyers, the takeaway is simple: the infrastructure gap that made an EV feel like a compromise just a couple of years ago is closing quickly — especially on the country's busiest corridors.
