Tata Harrier EV: India's First Mass-Market AWD Electric SUV

The Tata Harrier EV isn't just an electric version of a familiar name — it's Tata's most premium and most capable EV to date, and the first mass-market electric SUV in India to offer proper all-wheel drive. Built on Tata's Acti.ev+ platform, it aims squarely at buyers who want long range, genuine off-road ability, and flagship-level tech, all without stepping into luxury-brand pricing. Here's a closer look.

Price and Positioning

The Tata Harrier EV is priced from around ₹21.49 lakh to ₹28.99-32.24 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant and battery pack, spread across roughly 17-18 configurations. It sits as Tata's most premium EV on sale, positioned to rival the Mahindra XEV 9e, BYD Atto 3, and the upcoming Tata Sierra EV. In March 2026, Tata also introduced a more accessible AWD variant, the Fearless+ QWD 75, priced at ₹26.49 lakh, bringing the dual-motor setup to a wider range of buyers rather than restricting it to the range-topping Empowered trim.

Battery, Range and Performance

The Harrier EV is available with two battery pack options: a 65kWh unit with a claimed MIDC range of 538km, and a larger 75kWh pack that pushes claimed range up to 627km. The 65kWh pack is offered only with rear-wheel drive, while the 75kWh battery is available in both RWD and AWD (Quad Wheel Drive) configurations. The dual-motor AWD setup combines a 238hp rear motor with a 158hp front motor, and the car can sprint from 0-100kmph in a claimed 6.3 seconds — quick for a vehicle this size.

Real-world range, as reported by owners, typically lands between 400-500km depending on driving style and conditions, which lines up well against the claimed figures. Charging is handled through a 120kW DC fast charger, capable of taking the battery from 10-80% in about 25-30 minutes, or adding around 250km of range in just 15 minutes. A 7.2kW AC home charger is also offered for overnight charging, alongside a 3.3kW portable charging option.

Built for More Than Just City Roads

Unlike most electric SUVs that lean purely into urban use, the Harrier EV pushes into genuine off-road territory. It offers multiple terrain modes — including Snow, Sand, and Rock Crawl — made possible by its AWD system, a first for a mass-market EV in this segment. Design-wise, it stays close to the combustion-engine Harrier's muscular styling, with EV-specific touches like a closed-off front grille with strakes, a connected LED DRL bar, redesigned aero-optimised 19-inch alloy wheels, and a charging port where the fuel filler used to be.

Practicality is well covered too, with a 502-litre boot and a 67-litre front frunk for smaller items — useful additions given the size of the vehicle.

Cabin and Technology

Inside, the Harrier EV brings a genuinely flagship-level feature set for its price point. Highlights include a large 14.5-inch Samsung QLED touchscreen, a Tata DrivePay UPI-based payment system built into the car, adaptive cruise control, ventilated seats, ambient interior lighting, and ADAS features. Segment-first touches include Summon Mode for remote vehicle movement, a Digital Key, and an Auto Park function.

The dashboard layout is largely shared with the standard Harrier, split into a wide, four-layer design, with the range-topping Empowered variant getting a distinct white-grey colour theme while other trims stick to tan-black or all-black interiors.

Safety

The Tata Harrier EV has been crash-tested by Bharat NCAP and earned a full 5-star safety rating for both adult and child occupant protection, placing it among the safest cars tested by the agency, alongside the Mahindra XEV 9e. It comes with a comprehensive ADAS suite and multi-mode regenerative braking with paddle shifters for adjustable brake feel.

Who Should Consider the Harrier EV?

The Harrier EV suits buyers who:

  • Want a large, family-sized electric SUV with genuine long-distance and even off-road capability
  • Are looking for AWD performance in an EV without moving up to luxury-brand pricing
  • Value strong safety credentials and a heavily loaded feature set over a purely city-focused runabout

Reviewers consistently point to its stellar ride quality, strong real-world range, and instant EV performance as its biggest strengths, while noting a few rough edges around software glitches and boot space being slightly eaten into by the spare wheel. For buyers who can stretch the budget, it currently stands out as one of the most complete and capable electric SUVs on sale in India.

Prices and specifications mentioned are ex-showroom figures and subject to change. Check with your nearest Tata Motors dealership for current on-road pricing and the latest variant details.
